Big Mamma’s Joke

Big Mamma’s Joke

A Nuclear Holocaust and Burning to Death in Climate Warming are tricky little twins who have one ultimate goal — the extermination of the human race.  Holocaust is impatient and wants to get it done and over with.  Climate Warming, let us call him, Charboy, takes its time and gloats at the decades of human misery it will impose before it manages the final extinction of the species by roasting.  Holocaust is only accidentally kinder, and embraces torture, but not for eons.  Charboy is sadistic and loves to impose long-term inescapable suffering as it slowly burns the earth to a crisp.  These tricky twins are the progeny of the dead, the nonliving, the non-breathing — the corporations of the world that are nourished solely by profit, and, as the nonliving, they hold no respect for life in any form.

The most interesting phenomenon is that man has not only created his god in heaven but these equally invisible entities on earth, these corporations, that, in turn, have given birth to the tricky twins.  How remarkably deranged that man should have created these monsters with no soul, and no conscience, these lifeless leviathans that will sell life for dollars, health for dollars, morality for dollars, love for dollars, and, indeed, they will sell the planet itself along with every twig and tree every blooming rose and chirping bird along with all its human creators if there is offered or even imagined the most distant hope for dollars.  And in the end, we, the creators of these killer corporations to whom we have enslaved ourselves, are as helpless against our own creations as a child tied on the tracks before an oncoming, runaway train.

I say Big Mamma Up in the Sky looks down on this with disgust.  If we sit quietly and listen to the murmuring of a mountain stream we can hear what she is saying:  “Just look at these creatures called humans whom I have created in my latest experiment.  It has been a dreadful mistake.  I gave them the will to survive.  This brought on their eagerness to kill each other.  I gave them a mind to create, but they created not only beauty but invented every horror and instrument of destruction knowable in the universe.  I gave them the desire for pleasure.  But that turned into greed and prolificacy.   I gave them love, but the underside too often prevailed which is their apathy to suffering and their hatred of their fellow man.  Yes, man was a mistake.  A very bad one.   Perhaps my worst.

“But, as always, I shall have the last laugh.  With man I have no need to intercede.  These madmen will either blow themselves off the planet with nuclear bombs or burn themselves off the planet with global warming.  And their masters, those mindless corporations, unwittingly work night and day to terminate the species since corporations see a vast profusion of dollars in bombs and global pollution, all of which proves that madness and evil ultimately prevail.

“But no.  Lest I forget:  the concepts of good and evil are human creations.  Without humans there is neither good nor evil.  Without humans there is only beauty.  My intention was to design these humans to see and marvel at my works.  But with their insane destruction of their own habitat, that which is beautiful shall revert into the eternal unseen until, of course, I nominate some other creature that deserves to replace mankind, one that can fully appreciate my work.

“Ah, yes, how could I have forgotten?  I shall next try frogs.  Even now in these late times I hear them still singing.  They are bursting with such joy.  They sing all night.  They do not kill each other.  Yes, pollywogs and frogs will be my next great masterpiece.  My frogs will thrive in hot, polluted waters and radioactive slime.  Oh, how I love them!  I will give them a third eye so they can see my beauty in 3D.  Yes, of course, I have loved them all along, but their simple beauty has been overshadowed by the larger, noisy creatures.  And, yes, it is true.  I have created frogs in my own image.

“You didn’t know that?  Well, that is the best joke of all.”

  1. I know ‘Big Mamma’ too, and her Son. He says this earth will not be destroyed by man and I believe Him. He destroyed most of the world once in a flood. ‘Big Mamma’ knew all along what would happen with free will. There is no surprise. His intention was, and He wants, a relationship with us, and has done all this to get it, but will not make us choose Him. So, He only has a relationship with those that choose Him. That is what free will is all about. As for global warming; that is the bad joke. The fraud has been uncovered, as you should know. We are to be stewards, and have not done a very good job of that; but then we are influenced by our inclination to have our own way, and of course the great deceiver. Happy trails.

  2. Another brilliant and insightful look at the human species. Sir, you are truly an American treasure. What Jack Lalanne, did for physical fitness, Gerry Spence does for rational thinking. God Bless You.

  3. Frog Dammit! So the planet really is going to croak… and my stock will be worthless? If you can’t save me, just save my stock.

  4. Gerry, Only you can shake us enough for us to stop and look at what the corporations are really doing to mankind and to our planet called,( for the time being) Earth. We should all do our best not to be enslaved to them in hopes they perish before we do. Do you think if I learn to croak well enough I could be saved by Big Mamma?

  5. This last post makes no sense whatsoever. Please, don’t waste our time with nonsensical ramblings. How ironic you write of what corporations are doing but fail to acknowlege the corporation you have created – your cult – the Spence lawyers college. You think you are god. But all you do is spout the same old stories, the same old tales, and seek an admiring group to worship you. How are you different from the Koch brothers, or even Dick Cheney? Your lawyers college is not real. It isn’t human. It has no soul, no conscience and is as lifeless as the corporations you rail against. And it loves money, thrives on money, celebrates money, promotes big money verdicts, robs and rapes it attendees for money and pressures the poor lawyers to give money to you and your corporation. Read your own college web site. It is slick and full of propoganda and focuses on the “big money verdicts” your accolytes obtain. It is all about money, isn’t it Mr. Spence. Money to make you and your accolytes even richer. So you can all buy bigger, better jets. Hob nob with the wealthy, greedy, arrogant bastards of the bar. Aren’t you rich? If you were a real caring, compassionate, selfless man, you would donate your money to the cause you believe in instead of asking others to pay for it. You are a greedy, selfish, hypocrit.

  6. Next stop Willoughby.

  7. If Big Mamma hands the world over to the frogs tell her to be prepared for the inevitable war with the toads…

  8. Dear Gerry,

I think you could better emphasize the beauty in life. You have to look closer, but you will see (even with bad eyes 😉 ). Every disadvantage has a advantage.

    Greetings Niels

  9. If anyone has watched “Earth Without Us”, Mother Earth would be happy without us.
I agree with Mr. Spence’s “Big Mamma”….Mother Earth and Father Sky will eventually teach us all that we’re not the hot shots we think we are.

  10. I like Cormac McCarthy’s book “The Road” . It is about the world that you write about here. Destroyed by something cataclysmic and the remaining human race trying to survive mostly by killing other humans. Very depressing at first. Yet the journey is a father’s love for his son and in the end that love triumphs. When I read your books I see your father’s love for you and how that has triumphed as well.

  11. Yes, Man had “Tunnel Vision” and never appreciated the beauty of everything in the Universe.

The irony is he was always so arrogant re: being “Smarter” than other species.

  12. Gerry, I got an e-mail today from a lawyer in Las Vegas who read and agrees with one of my New York Times commentaries, likes my website, and suggests I read your work.

I am so glad I found you thanks to her. Going on 76, I feel like I have found a long lost brother! I will be following your writings!

    Best regards,

    Gary

  13. I feel that man is broken, a default “king” of all living things yet we don’t belong here at all. At times I agree, “…that madness and evil ultimately prevail,” other times I see such goodness it lifts my soul. Man’s potential is certainly a double edged sword. My faith is only a hope, a desperation at times, that there must be something more because here – alone, we are fallen.

  14. Thanks for keeping it real, Gerry! Terrie 🙂

  15. I love the way you write. I have been an admirer for a couple years. Your ways with words strike chords. The loudest, reminds me that I am a writer and always have been. My cicumstances took a flip. I too must evolve. I just restarted my own blog. I would really appreciate your feedback on my last 2 posts. Brutal honesty would be best. http://www.diaryofadogbiscuit.blogspot.com
    Thanks! JJ

  16. This was a little scary, Just the thought of being replaced; I guess. We are Master’s of Distruction and that is just the opposit of the way our Lord teaches us. God Bless You and Yours

  17. Perhaps the Twins are actually Triplets? The third end-game being genetic engineering in which the corporate world owns life at the cellular level. Big Mama in the sky is overthrown by the white coated revolutionists in the labs of the corporations. Single cell manipulation to monopolize a war of death, disease, and suffering.

  18. When did there become a monopoly on helping people? If TLC isn’t a cult, how come they trash all other programs and tout theirs as the one true path for trial lawyers? How come the things you teach and ideas you share are kept secret? And how come you, your college and alumni attack and criticize any person, group or organization with different ideas? You attack Ball, Friedman, NITA, AAJ and even law schools. You attack judges. You think you and your college have all the answers and are the one and only way for lawyers to learn. And the saddest thing, all you and your alumni care about is money. You don’t care about people at all. It is disgusting!

    • Closed and uninformed minds are all we really criticize.

      Gerry

      • Pleeeeaaaassseeeeeee…….. Mr. Spence!! I have been to one of your cult fests and the last thing YOU have is an open mind. You think your way is the only right way and denigrate all other CLE programs and organizations. You cling to the ridiculous belief that every case is about “betrayal.” You hold high pressure fund raisers. Your faculty are a bunch of Spence worshippers who are mainly incompetent. And at your college in WY, you hold tribal ceremonies with drums and dancing and give out amulets. And yet you balk at all labels such as “CULT” being put on your organization. Your staff and web site tout the “big money” verdicts some of your alumni get. Money is all you care about. Maybe you ought to take a lesson from Tony Serra, a man you used to get unsuspecting lawyers to come to one of your cult meetings in Big Sur. Tony Serra is the real thing. He is a man of integrity. Unlike you.

    • Don’t stare into Gerry’s eyes too long or you too will be drawn to The Cult, and before you know it you will be wandering through the Wind River Valley in nothing but a camo loin cloth and an elk femur bone through your nose.

You are dangerously close just posting on this blog, so perhaps you should start some preemptive deprogramming now.

Remember, DO NOT look him in the eyes!!!!!!!

  19. Mama I am not laughing.

  20. Tom & Ashley Hayes

Oh How very true Mama’s Joke really is and as always she will get the last laugh!

  21. As the corporations focus on profit as the end all be all. Capitalism at it’s finest. To be pursued at all costs as a means of obtaining the end result of what the profits provide…materialism and the worship of wealth. The flaw is that more is always better and any amount is never enough. This is why the wealthy pursue such things as owning fleets of luxury cars beyond anything they could possibly ever need.
Excessiveness is the order of the day.
Contrast this against aboriginal societies. The best hunter of a group still would not wantonly kill more than he could consume. Because he was the best at this did not give him the right to plunder and waste a resource.
In capitalism the best hunters are those who make the most money. The wealthy. But in this world they have the ‘right’ to consume whatever they can afford. So if they want to consume the resources that could sustain untold numbers of people that is their right.
On my first visit to Las Vegas I stood on the roof of a casino and had the thought that this was what it was all about. This was why the land was taken, people decimated and enslaved. The crowning pinnacle of this society…the best that modern man could come up with for entertainment and excess. Man, who looks at an Eden and only sees resorts and profit.

  22. And after that – back to her wonderous beauty.

  23. If one googles “Youtube video of “The Scene” from movie Soylent Green”
and clicks it on – Big Mamma’s restoration of her wondrous natural beauty will bring tears to the eyes.

  24. Gerry Spence, our host, has perhaps too humbly told us that he would not have been accepted, or accepted, being a judge, but good Lord didn’t we need him appearing on the Court in Citizens United! At least he could have spoken “Big Mama’s Joke” somewhere in the summation. That powerful second paragraph should be engraved into a wall of black marble that congressional members and lobbyists have to inconveniently walk around on their way to work, or whatever it is they do. Or, better yet, climb cumbersomely over the face of the words by ascending, one by one, a rickety ladder like the struggling are using to climb out of the deep pit they’ve dug for us.
In one of his two short-stories of the Apocalypse- this one called “Earth’s Holocaust”- Nathaniel Hawthorne (related by James Mellow in his biography of Hawthorne) crafted a tale of the world’s vanities which are flung, one by one, into a giant bonfire set upon the broad Midwestern prairie. Hawthorne indicates that the site had been selected by the insurance companies. “Even the destruction of American society will be presided over by American business.” The setting was 1844. Thanks again, Gerry! SM NONA

  25. I remember driving cross country years ago and I rented an audio book .I can’t remember the name but there is a part that stuck with me and it went something like this. “We are not free,nor have we ever been free;
Pure freedom demands a perfect vision of reality
    One to painful for the healthy to endure;
It requires that we be alive, alert, and exquisitely
    aware of our raw being;
Faced with the pain of freedom man begs
    for his shackles
Afraid of death ,he seeks the stultifying
    boundaries of religion
Afraid of want he accepts the bondage
    of employment
Afraid of rejection he conforms to the
    commands of society
If our knowledge of freedom was perfect
    We would not choose it
For pure freedom is pure terror.
Something in the book about a couple horses going to slaughter
Part about an old man that said “I’m my own God.”
Baby owls won’t foul there own nest
Pieces come back to me now and then but I retain most of the freedom
thoughts. Thank you so much Mr.Spence . I drove many miles listening to you. I’m a big fan. Now that your eighty ,think well at least I’m not ninety
and when you get ninety, think well at least I’m not a hundred. Be safe and write more good stuff.

    • Yes, as long as we have freedom from pain. But in the end, perhaps death is pure freedom. Thank you.

      gerry

      • Not sure about death being “pure freedom,” I tend to think it will probably be like everything else we’ve experienced – not as great as we had hoped or as bad as we feared…

  26. Thank you for all the wonderful things you have done and continue doing.

Re: “But in the end perhaps death is pure freedom.”

That certainly must be so for the SIX MILLION BABIES AND CHILDREN who DIE worldwide EVERY YEAR – BY THE AGE OF 5 (FIVE) YEARS OLD – from HUNGER.

How could man have no conscience to this extent and STILL talk about “Banning abortion.”

Yes, MAN was Big Mamma’s mistake through stupidity. All one can do in the meantime is TRY to stop the suffering as much as possible.

  27. Also want to mention that personal observation has made me aware that the deepest, kindest and most selfLESS people are NOTt church every Sunday mornings, Christmas Eve, etc.

Many of them (Volunteers) are at Humane Societies at 7am on Sunday mornings to walk, excerise and play with the dogs awaiting adoption for 4-7 hours per day. And, they are not at some Midnight Xmas Eve Mass because on Christmas morn when everyone is “Opening presents” etc., THEY are over at the Shelter by 6-7 AMfor the day (or atleast 1/2) since the dogs still have t o be walked that day also.

But once a week when that e mail comes from the Head of Volunteers “To Volunteers: Dogs adopted this week!!” – life is worth living still and you CAN’T give up.

    • Steve,
I read your rant.Thought maybe you and others might enjoy this.
George Graham Vest – Tribute to Dogs (c. 1855) after winning a case against a man who killed a dog
Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

  29. Green Frog,
I was thinking that in 99% of the cases where people post “On the attack” – it’s reallyabout “Killing the Messenger” and shouldn’t be taken personally.

Why? One example is when the stories started breaking about the huge numbers of Pedophile Priests – the masses got ANGRY AT THE MEDIA for PUBLISHING THE STORIES!

Yes Green Frog, it’s about “Killing the Messenger.”

P.S. Have read several of your books. Attended a day-long trial lawyer seminar that you gave in the early 1980s. Changed my life.

  33. Green Frog: It would be SO interesting to hear Professor/Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking’s reply to your “Big Mamma’s Joke”, since he has given man under 100 years to extinction. Would you consider submitting it to him for comment?

If you send it to him yourself – obviously a greater chance at an early reply.

Both require a zero sum belief political system, while ignoring the integrety of balance/time for good ecology and economy.

  44. Regarding these twins, this is a reflection of the type of economy that we have developed, that of war, or that of peace. These directions can be closely observed by looking at history, that of the post World War II era, when Ford actually provided the munitions to Adolf. No steps were taken to provide an embaradero to prevent the genocide of the Jews. No steps were taken to stop the purging of Germany’s own people by the tightly controlled health program.

The development of environmental friendly progress is a step to peace.

  45. This is a timely contribution from Marilyn Vos Savant, world’s highest IQ, from her recent Parade column of May 1, 2011.

Question: If human life were to vanish from Earth, leaving only animals and plants, how long would it take for the environment to return to a pristine state?

Marilyn’s Reply: Buildings, roads, dams and bridges would become ruins in just a few centuries, but they’d take thousands of years to disappear entirely. Meanwhile, nuclear waste in long-term storage would gradually become harmless. Without human attention our hundreds of active reactors would catch fire or melt down and release radiation, but even that wouldn’t stop nature’s rapid return. (Many plants and animals seem to be flourishing in the contaminated area around Chernobyl, the scene of a nuclear diaster in Ukraine only 25 years ago) Excess carbon dioxide would be cleansed by the oceans over tens of thousands of years. By then, added methane would be long gone. The toxic impact of pollutants such as DDT wouldn’t last even a century.

  46. Marilyn continued, – final paragraph

So the planet would forget all about us in maybe 50,000 years-far less time than humankind has existed.

And if an unaltered atmosphere isn’t an essential part of what you call a pristine state, our influence would bne gone in less than half that time – and maybe much less.”
