Can We Hide From the Insane Master?

It’s time we lay naked the myth, expose it like ripping the shirt off a fat man’s belly. We are not a democracy. Americans are not free. Our politicians do not represent us. We have not been taught or told the truth. None. We are the new slaves.
Slaves must have a master. Yes. The master is the corporate glob that controls us, speaks for us, that provides us with our only voice, the corporate media, that uses us up for its profit, that engorges itself while masses of our people remain jobless and hungry and that uses our resources and children to extend its aggression across the world for more profit.
The master is dead, of course. It does not breath or feel, and it is immortal. Such a frightening spectacle, for the master is not only dead, but insane! It is addicted to profit. Does it not terrorize us to see these organisms, these profit seeking corporations, still fighting for more, squeezing the life blood out of its workers for more, cheating its shareholders for more, twisting its barrowers for more, killing for more, blithely destroying the earth for more, bringing on wars where untold thousands of the innocent are wounded and killed – all for more? More!
In short, if I were to describe a monster so large it could not be seen, so ubiquitous that it covered every part of our being, so powerful that it controls our government and the governments of many nations, yet a monster without a heart or morals – and that has such power over the minds of the people that the people, the slaves, believe they are free and are willing to lay down their lives for the monster – if realizing this truth, might we all not run, hide, yes, scurry into small holes like frightened rabbits to seek refuge somewhere where the monster could not reach us? But what if I tell you that there is no place to hide? The master, the monster, the corporate glob occupies every nook and cranny where we once might have hidden. And it knows where we are. Even a cow can occasionally break through the fence and find momentary freedom in the neighbor’s pasture, but not the people. We cannot escape.
Is there hope? Stay tuned.

  1. Gerry, again you bring us around to the truth. Democracy, where? Our, or more correctly the Corporate politicians are there to do the bidding of the corporate insane monster. More and more profit, even if it means our young servicemen die for it. We are lied to by every branch of the government, every politician. The only thing that keeps us slaves from going insane, is we are afraid to look over the wall of truth and see the other side, for if we did we to would go insane. We will hide behind our large TV screens, our steering wheels of fancy cars, and the walls around our over sized homes. If there is such a place to hide the corporate insane monsters have them and of course will never share, as that would dilute their profit. Maybe I’ll find freedom when I find my personhood, until then I am staying tuned, and Bless you for the wake up call.

  2. If we still can, while we still can, how do we kill the monster?

  3. Yes, there is hope. I am drowning in it. Help, Gerry! Help me, people!

  4. Suppose you had a country that invades other countries because they think they may be in some danger. This strong country just happens to be the biggest arms dealer in the world, the runner up not even close. This country has over 800 military bases, (maybe as many as 1000) around the world and 0 foreign bases on its territory. This is a rich country that got its start by slaughtering the inhabitants and taking control of the vast lands. This country tortures its prisoners, jails more citizens per ca-pita than any other nation. This country will lock up those who cry for peace but honor those who lie, cheat and try to destroy all its freedoms. This country make millionaires out of scoundrels and liars and the press is brought and paid for. The leaders say that we must go to war but stay back in their air conditioned halls of government and watch as millions of poor people are murdered or injured beyond belief. This country is not Germany of the 1930s or the U.S.S.R. of the 60s; not even Italy of the 20s; this is the United States of America of 2011. My country! I did not serve in the US Navy for this! 5. Gerry,
Keep telling it like it is.

  7. Thank you for stating the truth.
Many of us say, “Government by the corporation; of the corporation; and for the corporation”; the “people” don’t exist except as slaves.

  8. Mr. Spence-Excellent message. So well put. Defining the problem should help start a solution process. Maybe it starts with requiring the N.Y.S.E. and the Chicago Futures Exchange to acquire a “gaming license” for all futures and derivatives trading.

    Dear Gerry,
Your blog reminds me that there once was very clear thinking regarding freedom. Thank you for being there.
Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have worked in Boston as a broadcast journalist for many years, both on air and in print. Nat Hentoff chronicled a nasty prior restraint leveled against me in 2000 as the greatest breach of the First Amendment in U.S. history. I was devastated then, as I am now, that freedoms are being whittled away…or even given away by a nation that seems to be overly concerned with “entertaining themselves to death.”
Although it is important to be aware of issues regarding other international interests, I wonder why I don’t see people demonstrating in our streets as local neighborhoods are being ravaged by financial losses and, most of all foreclosures.
Nearly two years ago, I brought information to the US Attorneys’ office in Boston, and presented him with enough documentation to prove that certain financial institutions were robber barons; and that those same institutions would benefit from the bankruptcy of America.
The scheme was complicated and involved words like “MERS” and “robo-signers”…and he looked up at me after examining the evidence and said: “Man, I just don’t get it.”
But someone, somewhere, has to get it. I hope you do. Any interest? I hope so.
    Sincerely, Jeanine M. Graf

  11. Mr. Spence
I know you are right. I have listened to the corporate run news media.
I favored Fox for quite awhile. I listened then I noticed the hypocricy and ambivalent nature of their coverage of the news. I noticed that it is alright to use words like Enough and Too Much when you refer to the working class. The word Lazy is appropriate when you refer to the unemployed whom have the audacity to ask for the benefits from the money that was taken from their wages, and the elderly whom sponge off the social security programs, and believe they are ‘entitled’ just because the government took it out of their lifes wages and said they were saving it for them when they got old. Commentators on Fox News throw those words around easily enough But should anyone dare use those same words to describe the rich corporations. It is Basphemy!!! How dare anyone use a word like ‘Enough’ when it came to company profits, and God forbid you ever consider that a corporation could make Too Much money. The mere suggestion of scrutiny of a corporation is akin to questioning God.
How anti-American, what a traitor to capitalism anyone whom thinks like that must be.
However, those words are all quite appropriate when you apply them to the working class.
Glen Beck said we need to protect the rich corporations because they give us our jobs and pay most of the taxes. He said to remember that the Poor will always be with us, no matter what.
The use of a word like ‘entitlement’ is an easy enough word to understand when it is applied to a rich corporation. But the use of the word ‘entitlement’ by the working class or common people is obscene and disgusting. To make matters worse the working class is often hypercritical of one another and the impoverished. We escape the burden and the confusion of it all by reading, watching, and listening to the escapades of rich celebrities and corporate power mongers. We hope and we make wishes that center around “If I Could Be Like That”
    We are oten confused.
Thank you Gerry Spence for caring and trying to help us out of this dark confusion.

    Thank you, sir.

  13. As a young boy, I remember my Great Grandfather telling me about when he was a boy of 12 working in the textile mills of Mass. Back then, he would go to the bathroom and break his nose by slamming his face against the wall. He did this because conditions were inhumane, and he was simply looking to get out of the factory for a little while. Today, the laws protect us from such inhumane conditions. Or do tjhey?

  14. Sounds like someone is having a bad day? As a fellow cynic, I find your elequently stated summary of life in America to be spot on. Beware however of those who benefit from the current arrangement as they will, no doubt, brand you an unpatriotic, pinko-commie (excuse the 50’s reference) for merely telling the truth. Too many, perhaps unwilling to accept their slave status, cling to the hope that they too will one day cash a check at the expense of others. Others are simply resigned to their status and the fact that, yes, things could be worse…

  15. Itsworsethanthat

Actually, I think it would be more accurate to state that the vast majority of people are enslaved by incorporeal entities created by a tiny, intelligent, self-perpetuating, well-educated, and well-organized minority of people. A corporate form, like any other organizational form, is worthless without people to power it, especially people directing it at the top.

I find it hard to believe that this soul-less corporate blob just happens to keep funneling wealth toward the less than 1% of the population that sits at the top of its hierarchical pyramid, all by itself, without any human input.

The corporation is a giant killer robot; think Power Rangers or Voltron. Outwardly, it appears horrific and invincible, but at the point of the head, on the inside, sit a relative handful of people at the controls. These people created the killer corporate robot for their own selfish survival and prosperity purposes, at the expense of everyone else.

The difference between the model you described and the model I described is that the model I described creates personal responsibility, and therefore personal liability onto the controllers of the corporate machine.

    • Yes, human responsibility is the issue. But the corporate form shields the people in charge from most kinds of liability. Hence the corporation become soulless, bloodless, dead and immortal –immortal because it survives generation after generations of humans who grab the dead wheel, guide it over the rights of the citizens, and, with their profits in hand die or move on for other generations to do the same. The corporation is not only dead. It can live forever. It was an institution our forefathers did not foresee and distrusted.

      • Sounds like a foundation for a revolution. The Internet may just be the spark that lights those deep dark crevasses, which protect these corrupt bloodless heartless institutions. It is know as legislative protection, which has been purchased through the labor of slaves. If we continue to foolishly ride the back of the tiger, our destiny shall be to end up inside.

  16. Brigadier: You don’t think we’re just going to walk out of India!
Gandhi: Yes. In the end, you will walk out. Because 100,000 Englishmen simply cannot control 350 million Indians, if those Indians refuse to cooperate.

  17. Ben Franklin summed up the problem some years back when he said that democracy must be more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

  18. No argument here though I wince when such negative focus is directed at politicians. While I concede that most give the appearance of being dishonest, deceitful, incompetent, without morals, and otherwise disreputable people they are also slaves with little or no real power. The power of government on any level is concentrated in the hands of the bureaucrats entrenched in their jobs that are passed down from father to son and mother to daughter. These people could care less who the current politicians are and remain smug in the knowledge that in a very short time the present occupant will be forced out and business as usual will return. Interestingly enough the Vietnamese employed much the same tactic to rid themselves of “Conquerors” for a thousand years. I remain a One-Hundred percent Disabled American Veteran as the legacy for my ignorance of this fact and participation in my Country’s ill-advised, ill-conceived, inappropriate, and, at times, criminal attempt to alter this truth.

  19. Mr. Spence do you ever have a new idea or thought? As you are nearing the end of your life, perhaps you can regale us with ideas and thoughts that are not simply regurjitations of old ideas and thoughts you have written and spoken about before. It astounds me that you think we care about your redundant and recycled ideas. I have read them and heard you speak of them before. Little has changed in your rhetoric. It is the same old rant. You repeat the same old shit, over and over and over. I don’t see you doing anything to change the world. What this says to me is that you are no longer relevant and write to read your own words since you can’t seem to get any national attention. As a rich, white male, you are one of the slave masters. You enslave the lawyers who worship you and share nothing new with either them or society. You are obsolete. You are a dinosaur.

    @Gerry

The corporate description applies to all organizations that last over many generations. This includes religious institutions, governments, universities, clubs, orders, charities, etc. etc. They provide a thread of continuity.

If we abolished the corporate form, the elite would probably come up with some other stratagem to continue their one-sided raping and pillaging, like they did prior to the corporate form. The Soviet elite were pretty bad without privatized corporations running the show. It somehow seems to be an iron law of history that the elite are all psychopaths vis-a-vis the rest of humanity. I think they view themselves as predators performing a cruel but necessary social, or natural function of thinning the herd. How else can one explain the fact that they behave more or less the same under every political guise?

I view the corporate form as computer code. It can be written so that things are tolerable, or it can be hacked to serve only the interests of a few. In the same way that it wasn’t necessary for the Catholic Church to torture people to death during the Inquisition, it is not a necessity for corporations to deliver 20% profits to their shareholders every quarter, or to pay insane salaries and bonuses to the upper management while screwing everyone else. This happens because people tolerate it and don’t organize against it.

  21. The monster is finite it will by its own nature consume itself. The real question is what will you and I and that person over there do then ??

  22. thank you Gerry for articulating so beautifully what crosses my mind regularly. it is a daunting reality and i am so grateful not to be the only one who is terribly concerned.

  23. Wonderful hearing from you again, Gerry. As usual your depiction of the American scene is right on. It is nothing short of heartbreaking, especially for one who remembers the l940’s and 50’s. We had a President who, tho even in a wheelchair, took command and guided the nation. Americans were united and proved it with our Victory gardens, ration cupon books and folding bandages for the Red Cross who provided these for the soldiers. That America has disappeared. Our representative form of democracy is on board for themselves, and the corporations who bribe them. I can only imagine if the signers of our Constitution all came back and took a look around. The only question remaining for us is: What does the future hold for Americans if we continue on this way? A European country I recently visited did not have much to say about America. But I could sense that the people felt their country was theirs and it was functioning for them, and they were vigilant, but at peace. Thank you Gerry. Your words will resound and be meaningful and important, that is as long as the powers to be allow us to keep our internet sites!!

  24. When I was in college in the early ’60s, I wound up in a class with a strapping, pensive fellow who carried a ragged, thousand-page tome everywhere he went- under his arm or grasped in hand like a Bible of Calvin- his lesser textbooks tucked in a rucksack behind. He had long immersed himself in it, obviously, from its dog-eared, torn-and-tattered appearance, and faded cover. One day along into the semester I passed by his table in the Student Union where he customarily sat alone eating his hamburger while engrossed in the open book. I brought my grilled-cheese sandwich and chips back and sat across from him, uninterrupting. At some point he lost concentration and looked across at me. I told him I liked old worn-out books, as I felt that books absorb their readers as well. The poor student’s eyes lit up, and he seemed to turn into a man of power, dispensing the gospel of Ayn Rand as he tilted the spine up to reveal the declaration, “Atlas Shrugged.” You probably can guess the rest of the story.
He was of course reflecting the power of an idea, and this idea was in contest to determine the nature of the human soul: The refusal. The producers on strike, the shrug of the mighty Atlas, who tires of holding the world on his shoulders. We, the self-made, don’t have to share. The iconic Self. The czars of her new-elite, the almighty warren of the corporate dollar.
Gerry is right in that we have spawned and suckled monsters, resurrecting idealistically and feeding the hydra once wounded by anti-trust reform in the first part of the 20th Century. How soon will we all realize that Rand’s legacy is a corporatocracy that has morphed into a heartless entity while demanding absurdly the rights of “personhood”, as Gerry says, lacking soul, growing obese on printed money and cheap labor, which they have used to buy the U.S. Congress, and most of our Supreme Court, and compromise the White House. Our Democracy is bought and paid for. We are owned. Ayn Rand’s acolytes have come of age. They are on a roll.

Isn’t it time for a new idea to breach, like a mighty whale, and lift itself before the view of the tired worker, the harrassed businessman, the underpaid teacher, the outsourced professional, the quandaried student, the unemployed who are called “hobos” and lazy by politicians, those whose security and pride and money have been stolen by the manipulators and speculators. It is an idea smoldering in a fireworks factory, awaiting its spark. The people will one day decide they have had enough. They are greater in spirit and in number than the corporations. I was wanting for Obama’s State of the Union to contain, as its “Sputnik Moment,” a declaration of independence from the plutocracy that looms over us. A promise in the name of the people to remove corporate influence from our elections, to rescind the myth of corporate “personhood’, to place a levy on the out-of-control futures trades, on outsourcing, and Wall Street dealings, and offshore havens. That would have told us how to “Win the Future” clearly and in the spirit of freedom, to counter the “WTF” of Atlas. There would have been dancing in the great square, and the President’s historical legacy would be secure.
We will learn from Spence how this next great idea may shape itself.
    Thank you! SM NONA

  26. Are you aware that federal law precludes and prohibits heads of non-profits from receiving perks or any form of compensation from their non-profits? Perks and compensation are defined very broadly! What do you think of this?

who put the letter of the law above the plight of a sick little boy!!!
I wrote a poem about it which I would like to share with you.I too write poems. Jaffray/ Auckland-New Zealand

  28. Gerry you always manage, with the greatest of ease, to tell it like it is. Like poetry to one ears. Only wish corporations had half as much integrity. Greed prevents this honest rapport. We are the butter on their bread, They gobble us up at each turn.
    Thanks for the insight!

  29. You can never trust in the arm of the flesh

  30. Until politicians are truly public servants, no corporate puppets, the system will go on. Why should a “public servant” be afforded such retirement packages at our expense? Why should they be escorted around in fancy cars? A government FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE has been lost long ago. The status, financial benefits and the privileges that come with “public service” are all supported by more money, money that wants to keep its power. This is corporations, the super-rich etc. Money runs the political decisions and when a decision is offered that threatens the money, opposition arises immediately and with great fervor. We have lost our public servants and, instead, they have been replaced by people of privilege, money, and power, all supported by the others that have privilege, money, and power, including corporations. In all of that, those without the privilege, power and money are left to fend for themselves when, if it worked the way is was created to work, they would have has much say as any portion of our population. Just my 2 cents.

  31. Hello Mr. Gerry and friends. I have a question…All of us remember indelibly that event on 9/11, like a ghastly video player set on creep. I have another grossly connected memory I’ve been trying to reconcile f0r ten years, and I’m wondering if others of you share it.
It was in a midweek in March of 2002 and I was seated on the couch watching the evening news. A woman announcer was speaking, and informed us that BinLaden had made another of his taunting tapes (remember them?), and here came the mute still-frame of the white-robed warrier priest with his righteous smirk, as words from his newest release were played in Arabaic as their translation was dubbed in English on the screen. Here’s what BinLaden said:
“…Americans are going to have to give up their freedom. Your own government will take your freedoms from you.”
I sat bolt upright, and asked my wife, who was in the next room, “Did you see what he said?!”, and then related it to her. I felt that in those few words he had told us exactly what his plan was! This is incredible. This will be the morning’s headlines! The CIA has his plan now….I waited until the 9:00 news came on, and had my wife come in to watch it… Again, there it was, a repeat of the prior report: ..”Americans are going to have to give up their freedom..” I bought the Daily Star in the morning, but… nothing. It wasn’t mentioned. It unsettled me for days, and as time went on I wondered what happened, and, though largely incomputerate, even considered googling the bin’s speeches to find the words, but was told by friends and relatives, “You don’t want to do that! You google that name at your own peril- and I’m sure in those days they were right. I remember telling my wife that night, “Bin Laden is not going to hit us again; that was it… He’s banking on us to continue the attack on our selves.” Now I’m not a conspiracy-theorist, but I’ve always wondered why that news, once released, seems subsequently to have been buried. Does anyone have an explanation?? Did we stupidly become incahoots with this monster? Thanks. SM NONA

  32. PS. Are ALL Holy Rollers so full of hate and vulgarity?

Maybe that’s why his books aren’t doing so well?

  33. Democracy, are you kidding me? Does a real democracy produce 24 Million Families separated by various CPS and DCFS – Child Protective Services? Does a democracy pay public Schools to discover kids with ADD so they can be feed psychotropic drugs to benefit Corporate Farmaco-Elite? Does a real democracy kill their own presidents and senators when they dare tell the truth? Does a REAL democracy produce largest concentration of prisoners per 1000 citizens, which is approximately three times worse than what “our friends” at China have?

Are we the Country of Monsters or just credit slaves gone mad in an attempt to survive contractions and expansions of “credit” on behalf of few on the Wall Street? Slaves of International “Banksters” on whose behalf we pay taxes and interest, not on money they did not have to lend us at the first place, but on credit created out of the thin air with a stroke of the key on a keyboard… did you know that Soviet Union was British Social Experiment, which is now being perfected and implemented right here?

The Communist behind the iron curtain used to scare their own people with paroles such as “enemies are everywhere” Sounds familiar? Do your research!

  34. Whoever believes that this is somehow new situation on the ground is ignorant at best. It’s called PROJECTION.

    • I have been giving this a little thought. The complaint is that I have no new thoughts. I think there is a basis for that. I was wondering if Martin Luther King, Jesus, Buddha, and Darwin had any new thoughts. It is like getting stuck in the mud. You have only one idea, and that is to get out. Until we solve our problems we will be stuck in the mud. We can’t get out unless we know we are stuck.

      So…

PS. I am not in the company of the above saints. I am just stuck in the mud.

  36. (And it makes one not know whether to laugh or cry for mankind.)

  37. Gerry, you’re right on the money. And it appears that the corporate monster, though it is ever-intrusive , in many cases refuses to defend itself against today’s “common thievery” – that of the cyber criminals. Cyber crime now involves more money than the drug cartel’s income, yet the corporate machine refuses to hire experienced engineers who could put a stop to this attack on our economy. I personally have been out of work since last fall due in part to blatant age/wage discrimination, and read daily of the attacks against banking institutions , private individuals, and our military. The disgraceful hemorrhage of sensitive diplomatic information during the WikiLeaks scandal could have been prevented by an approximately $2000 investment in network monitoring software. The attacks continue, but the system refuses to defend us or retaliate against the criminal element.

  38. “I am just stuck in the mud.”
Well, what a better place this world would be if everyone decided to give up on ideas that haven’t worked for mankind and get “stuck in the mud” -or whatever you want to call it – WITH YOU!

    NOW we’d be getting somewhere………….

  39. And a slightly big Thank you.

[we will] have no time to think,
no means of calling our miss-managers to account
but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves
to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers…
And this is the tendency of all human governments.

  42. Mr. Spence,

Thank you once again for “telling it like it is”; I have always admired your work and style.

Now, how do we get rid of the master?

    Randall Ross

  43. “We The People are fortunate to have a forefather alive today and he is Gerry Spence.”

“The Beast is Corporatism and its fuel is corruption/pollution.”

“Corporatism does not want free energy, that is not taxed or has a high price tag so only the few could afford it, for it would be a way to empower the people and take away some of their control.”

“Corporatism has altered seeds (Monsanto Corp.), has chemically produced nitrogen, has engineered artificial ingredients/preservatives that have interfered with God’s great natural design and balance of life itself and this toxic soup is creating a furnace or fire so intense that will purify and sterilize the elements and the very make up of the planet.”

I type these words on a computer screen that is connected to the Patriot Act but will they ever be read or are they just eaten by the beast and a fake or false response is sent to make me think otherwise?

“Live as though tomorrow is the 2nd coming of our Master to judge the living and the dead and his Kingdom will have no end, for only under the Host’s wings is there a life force that can save us from the fire, Amen.”

  44. I wanted to focus on hate and thought control.
Yes the media promotes hate for hate sells, and this hate can be directed upon the sheep like a wolf. We see signs of it everyday in our culture and in some cases it ends up with a taking of a life or someone taking thier own life because of the abuse or bullying. It happens in the work place in various ways. A person could be piled up with so much work while others get very little. A person could loose benefits, hours or wages based on hate or discrimination or even be cast into the street of unemployment. Corporatism can monitor facebook, myspace, twitter, set up listening/spying devices in ones car, home, phones, computers and etc… The thought police can even use many eyes like gang stalkers who watch every ones move and monitor it back to a centralized location and then some of the information can at a later point in time be thrown back into the persons face to cause fear or anxiety to a point of literally cutting off ones head by psychological means and without a blunt sharp object and drugs that have no taste or smell might even be placed in ones drinking water or take a form of a gas. I know this stuff sounds bizzare and paranoid, but biowarfare is a reality and corporatism spends a lot of money on scientists and labs, just as the Nazi party did when they wanted to form the master race. Also corporatism uses sex to corrupt, manipulate and brainwash, the old saying, SEX SELLS and is original sin. One more thing, it amazes me that our justice system places such harsh sentences or jail time on cannibus, but our companies can make paints, household products, or whipped cream in a can that produce a much more detrimental high, but one must also remember that getting high is temptaion and a form of sin for it can and will dull ones senses as too much Alcohol will do.

**Below is an excerpt from Chapter I of George Orwells book 1984:**
The next moment a hideous, grinding speech, as of some monstrous machine running without oil, burst from the big telescreen at the end of the room. It was a noise that set one’s teeth on edge and bristled the hair at the back of one’s neck. The Hate had started.

As usual, the face of Emmanuel Goldstein, the Enemy of the People, had flashed on to the screen. There were hisses here and there among the audience. The little sandy-haired woman gave a squeak of mingled fear and disgust. Goldstein was the renegade and backslider who once, long ago (how long ago, nobody quite remembered), had been one of the leading figures of the Party, almost on a level with Big Brother himself, and then had engaged in counter-revolutionary activities, had been condemned to death, and had mysteriously escaped and disappeared. The programmes of the Two Minutes Hate varied from day to day, but there was none in which Goldstein was not the principal figure. He was the primal traitor, the earliest defiler of the Party’s purity. All subsequent crimes against the Party, all treacheries, acts of sabotage, heresies, deviations, sprang directly out of his teaching. Somewhere or other he was still alive and hatching his conspiracies: perhaps somewhere beyond the sea, under the protection of his foreign paymasters, perhaps even—so it was occasionally rumoured—in some hiding-place in Oceania itself.

Winston’s diaphragm was constricted. He could never see the face of Goldstein without a painful mixture of emotions. It was a lean Jewish face, with a great fuzzy aureole of white hair and a small goatee beard—a clever face, and yet somehow inherently despicable, with a kind of senile silliness in the long thin nose, near the end of which a pair of spectacles was perched. It resembled the face of a sheep, and the voice, too, had a sheep-like quality. Goldstein was delivering his usual venomous attack upon the doctrines of the Party—an attack so exaggerated and perverse that a child should have been able to see through it, and yet just plausible enough to fill one with an alarmed feeling that other people, less level-headed than oneself, might be taken in by it. He was abusing Big Brother, he was denouncing the dictatorship of the Party, he was demanding the immediate conclusion of peace with Eurasia, he was advocating freedom of speech, freedom of the Press, freedom of assembly, freedom of thought, he was crying hysterically that the revolution had been betrayed—and all this in rapid polysyllabic speech which was a sort of parody of the habitual style of the orators of the Party, and even contained Newspeak words: more Newspeak words, indeed, than any Party member would normally use in real life. And all the while, lest one should be in any doubt as to the reality which Goldstein’s specious claptrap covered, behind his head on the telescreen there marched the endless columns of the Eurasian army—row after row of solid-looking men with expressionless Asiatic faces, who swam up to the surface of the screen and vanished, to be replaced by others exactly similar. The dull rhythmic tramp of the soldiers’ boots formed the background to Goldstein’s bleating voice.

Before the Hate had proceeded for thirty seconds, uncontrollable exclamations of rage were breaking out from half the people in the room. The self-satisfied sheep-like face on the screen, and the terrifying power of the Eurasian army behind it, were too much to be borne: besides, the sight or even the thought of Goldstein produced fear and anger automatically. He was an object of hatred more constant than either Eurasia or Eastasia, since when Oceania was at war with one of these Powers it was generally at peace with the other. But what was strange was that although Goldstein was hated and despised by everybody, although every day and a thousand times a day, on platforms, on the telescreen, in newspapers, in books, his theories were refuted, smashed, ridiculed, held up to the general gaze for the pitiful rubbish that they were—in spite of all this, his influence never seemed to grow less. Always there were fresh dupes waiting to be seduced by him. A day never passed when spies and saboteurs acting under his directions were not unmasked by the Thought Police. He was the commander of a vast shadowy army, an underground network of conspirators dedicated to the overthrow of the State. The Brotherhood, its name was supposed to be. There were also whispered stories of a terrible book, a compendium of all the heresies, of which Goldstein was the author and which circulated clandestinely here and there. It was a book without a title. People referred to it, if at all, simply as THE BOOK. But one knew of such things only through vague rumours. Neither the Brotherhood nor THE BOOK was a subject that any ordinary Party member would mention if there was a way of avoiding it.

In its second minute the Hate rose to a frenzy. People were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices in an effort to drown the maddening bleating voice that came from the screen. The little sandy-haired woman had turned bright pink, and her mouth was opening and shutting like that of a landed fish. Even O’Brien’s heavy face was flushed. He was sitting very straight in his chair, his powerful chest swelling and quivering as though he were standing up to the assault of a wave. The dark-haired girl behind Winston had begun crying out ‘Swine! Swine! Swine!’ and suddenly she picked up a heavy Newspeak dictionary and flung it at the screen. It struck Goldstein’s nose and bounced off; the voice continued inexorably. In a lucid moment Winston found that he was shouting with the others and kicking his heel violently against the rung of his chair. The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but, on the contrary, that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge-hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp. Thus, at one moment Winston’s hatred was not turned against Goldstein at all, but, on the contrary, against Big Brother, the Party, and the Thought Police; and at such moments his heart went out to the lonely, derided heretic on the screen, sole guardian of truth and sanity in a world of lies. And yet the very next instant he was at one with the people about him, and all that was said of Goldstein seemed to him to be true. At those moments his secret loathing of Big Brother changed into adoration, and Big Brother seemed to tower up, an invincible, fearless protector, standing like a rock against the hordes of Asia, and Goldstein, in spite of his isolation, his helplessness, and the doubt that hung about his very existence, seemed like some sinister enchanter, capable by the mere power of his voice of wrecking the structure of civilization.

It was even possible, at moments, to switch one’s hatred this way or that by a voluntary act. Suddenly, by the sort of violent effort with which one wrenches one’s head away from the pillow in a nightmare, Winston succeeded in transferring his hatred from the face on the screen to the dark-haired girl behind him. Vivid, beautiful hallucinations flashed through his mind. He would flog her to death with a rubber truncheon. He would tie her naked to a stake and shoot her full of arrows like Saint Sebastian. He would ravish her and cut her throat at the moment of climax. Better than before, moreover, he realized WHY it was that he hated her. He hated her because she was young and pretty and sexless, because he wanted to go to bed with her and would never do so, because round her sweet supple waist, which seemed to ask you to encircle it with your arm, there was only the odious scarlet sash, aggressive symbol of chastity.

The Hate rose to its climax. The voice of Goldstein had become an actual sheep’s bleat, and for an instant the face changed into that of a sheep. Then the sheep-face melted into the figure of a Eurasian soldier who seemed to be advancing, huge and terrible, his sub-machine gun roaring, and seeming to spring out of the surface of the screen, so that some of the people in the front row actually flinched backwards in their seats. But in the same moment, drawing a deep sigh of relief from everybody, the hostile figure melted into the face of Big Brother, black-haired, black-moustachio’d, full of power and mysterious calm, and so vast that it almost filled up the screen. Nobody heard what Big Brother was saying. It was merely a few words of encouragement, the sort of words that are uttered in the din of battle, not distinguishable individually but restoring confidence by the fact of being spoken. Then the face of Big Brother faded away again, and instead the three slogans of the Party stood out in bold capitals:

    WAR IS PEACE
    FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
    IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

But the face of Big Brother seemed to persist for several seconds on the screen, as though the impact that it had made on everyone’s eyeballs was too vivid to wear off immediately. The little sandy-haired woman had flung herself forward over the back of the chair in front of her. With a tremulous murmur that sounded like ‘My Saviour!’ she extended her arms towards the screen. Then she buried her face in her hands. It was apparent that she was uttering a prayer.

At this moment the entire group of people broke into a deep, slow, rhythmical chant of ‘B-B!…B-B!’—over and over again, very slowly, with a long pause between the first ‘B’ and the second—a heavy, murmurous sound, somehow curiously savage, in the background of which one seemed to hear the stamp of naked feet and the throbbing of tom-toms. For perhaps as much as thirty seconds they kept it up. It was a refrain that was often heard in moments of overwhelming emotion. Partly it was a sort of hymn to the wisdom and majesty of Big Brother, but still more it was an act of self-hypnosis, a deliberate drowning of consciousness by means of rhythmic noise. Winston’s entrails seemed to grow cold. In the Two Minutes Hate he could not help sharing in the general delirium, but this sub-human chanting of ‘B-B!…B-B!’ always filled him with horror. Of course he chanted with the rest: it was impossible to do otherwise. To dissemble your feelings, to control your face, to do what everyone else was doing, was an instinctive reaction. But there was a space of a couple of seconds during which the expression of his eyes might conceivably have betrayed him. And it was exactly at this moment that the significant thing happened—if, indeed, it did happen.

Momentarily he caught O’Brien’s eye. O’Brien had stood up. He had taken off his spectacles and was in the act of resettling them on his nose with his characteristic gesture. But there was a fraction of a second when their eyes met, and for as long as it took to happen Winston knew—yes, he KNEW!—that O’Brien was thinking the same thing as himself. An unmistakable message had passed. It was as though their two minds had opened and the thoughts were flowing from one into the other through their eyes. ‘I am with you,’ O’Brien seemed to be saying to him. ‘I know precisely what you are feeling. I know all about your contempt, your hatred, your disgust. But don’t worry, I am on your side!’ And then the flash of intelligence was gone, and O’Brien’s face was as inscrutable as everybody else’s.

That was all, and he was already uncertain whether it had happened. Such incidents never had any sequel. All that they did was to keep alive in him the belief, or hope, that others besides himself were the enemies of the Party. Perhaps the rumours of vast underground conspiracies were true after all—perhaps the Brotherhood really existed! It was impossible, in spite of the endless arrests and confessions and executions, to be sure that the Brotherhood was not simply a myth. Some days he believed in it, some days not. There was no evidence, only fleeting glimpses that might mean anything or nothing: snatches of overheard conversation, faint scribbles on lavatory walls—once, even, when two strangers met, a small movement of the hand which had looked as though it might be a signal of recognition. It was all guesswork: very likely he had imagined everything. He had gone back to his cubicle without looking at O’Brien again. The idea of following up their momentary contact hardly crossed his mind. It would have been inconceivably dangerous even if he had known how to set about doing it. For a second, two seconds, they had exchanged an equivocal glance, and that was the end of the story. But even that was a memorable event, in the locked loneliness in which one had to live.

Winston roused himself and sat up straighter. He let out a belch. The gin was rising from his stomach.

His eyes re-focused on the page. He discovered that while he sat helplessly musing he had also been writing, as though by automatic action. And it was no longer the same cramped, awkward handwriting as before. His pen had slid voluptuously over the smooth paper, printing in large neat capitals—

    DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER
    DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER
    DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER
    DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER
    DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER

over and over again, filling half a page.

He could not help feeling a twinge of panic. It was absurd, since the writing of those particular words was not more dangerous than the initial act of opening the diary, but for a moment he was tempted to tear out the spoiled pages and abandon the enterprise altogether.

He did not do so, however, because he knew that it was useless. Whether he wrote DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER, or whether he refrained from writing it, made no difference. Whether he went on with the diary, or whether he did not go on with it, made no difference. The Thought Police would get him just the same. He had committed—would still have committed, even if he had never set pen to paper—the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed for ever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you.

It was always at night—the arrests invariably happened at night. The sudden jerk out of sleep, the rough hand shaking your shoulder, the lights glaring in your eyes, the ring of hard faces round the bed. In the vast majority of cases there was no trial, no report of the arrest. People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: VAPORIZED was the usual word.

  45. Gerry,

It’s a pleasure to to have the chance to exchange with you. The critical point of any art is figuring out where to start; after all any expression is art. My wife and I along with another partner operate a small lawn firm on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. I am not an attorney, I manage the law firm and do various background legal work. If I could I would go back, however, and get my legal degree. My entire fire resides around the embers of liberty, in fact I find that it encompasses my daily mental landscape. I speak and write about it constantly often to the disdain of my fellow man, yet I am finding more and more are willing to lend an ear. Not quite yet, but the air is readying itself for reform. Well, one would think that living in America’s “last frontier” we would enjoy perhaps a slightly exalted probability of liberty – a simple cushion, a simple comfort from the arbitrary interference from government’s junkie-like control; on the fucking contrary. I have never seen such a police state, it’s sickening to the core. With a population of ahhh, let’s say 15,000 in the immediate area, we enjoy three competing police forces with an overwhelming daily presence. Without getting into particulars we entertain case after case of nothing but petty, arbitrary exercise of government control. Long gone are the days of families sorting out their differences, long gone are the days of escorting Johnnie home with a warning and allowing the parents to distribute their own remedy. Johnnie is now being introduced to the state penal system at alarming rates. They can’t take kids away from their parents fast enough, they can’t lock the mentally ill, and the addicted up fast enough, they can’t even let let brothers and high schoolers sort out their issues with a good old fashion fist fight. Instead of minor repercussions such as after-school detention and grounding, these minors are now slapped with DV cases, and Felony assaults. It’s fucking maddening. Fighting the good fight can often be as maddening, that is if us crazies didn’t enjoy is so much. Well, I won’t labor on, but I read a lot and have heard of you before. I am of the ilk to read as much of the eminent dead as humanly possible along with those living individuals who strike my interest. Well, you certainly struck my interest when I read, “Give me Liberty”. What a masterpiece. I felt like I was reading what I have been expressing and saying for years, yet much more eloquently. As trite and cliche as it sounds, we are of the same cloth, and it’s refreshing to realize there are others that adorn the same fabric; one tends to feel a little less cold when there are others to share the fire with. I feel like I want to do more. Just figuring it all out. I sincerely appreciate your time and concern. And hope to exchange more in the future.

    Take good care, your pal

    Marc

  46. Gerry,

There is one question that I contend with concerning capitalism. I love capitalism, I believe it’s quite in-sync with evolution and propels progression and innovation through critical competition and relationship management, all of which are good – in and of themselves. Yet like any system, or framework, how does one keep the system from doing more damage than good? How can you assess and monitor the critical health of the dynamic without playing “god” or worse “government”.

  47. Did you see that ad on T V: “What makes Peter Peter” ?
A few days ago there were 3 posts up from one under the name Peter Smythe.
Now, there is one. The one post up by so called Peter, noted Tony Serra and Big Sur. I suppose one could come up with the idea not to pay taxes, and call that new, as Simon said. (as Serra paid the time on, CALIF). Anyway, I am not advocating that, so that must make me not a Peter fan from big D. I had an idea on why Senator Grassley, was very much anti real Lincoln Law, and I believe your Firm would be hard pressed to dispute that in view of what has happened.( beefs).
I have never met a Dept of Justice attorney who knows the difference between a profit and a cost. But, that idea must have been around a long
time, from some’s perspective. Who ever is writing under Peter, has a thorn under his saddle, but I have never attended a Thunderhead CLE.
Why Senator Grassley targeted Thunderhead(in WYO) was more than a new idea, it reeks of something far more insidious. I let Pattis know, he is not the only person on earth who has done CLE. But, I did attend St Anthony’s, and
I never felt Senator Grassley was the new Hossana.
But, that idea is something you folks in Jackson might look at if not stuck in the mud.

  48. Thank you, davidlmolinari. That ties the mind in a twisted knot. A historical parallel is excruciatingly exacted in Soltzhenitsyn’s “Gulag Archipelago.” Oppression is a worker in the mindscape to destroy the soul. And somehow this is known by the oppressor. SM NONA

  49. Actually, all three posts are up, under P Smythe, 2 under an other section.
He has one about Tony Serra and Big Sur. That is a red herring.
As noted, CLE takes many forms, from taxes, to non-porfits, to corporate mergers, to oil and gas deals. So, why are those CLE courses not put under the banner of religion, or that vein, by some ? Or, the target of the Charles Grassley games ? Some seem not to want to get into that, like the fellow who used the name Peter Smythe. What next, he gets into the bad rap Jesus had
laid on him because of inadequate legal representation .
Jurisdictional bars do not allow for real trials on the merits in federal courts.
Senator Grassley is the king of jurisdictional bars, a very anti-Lincoln law
notion, but some seem to be oblivious to that state of affairs in America

  50. Matthew G. Zatkalik

POGO, a comicstrip, provided this thought ‘We have met the enemy and he is us.’
The current situation is of our own making – by design or default. To characterize us as victims, slaves, or such is not helpful. A characterization that I have grown fond of is: The good got tired of doing good before the bad got tired of being bad.
This is my country. I take part in its success or I take advantage of it by using it. I quit with two more images:
    1. For a celebration people were encouraged to bring their wine and pour it into a community vat. While some brought good wine others brought watered down wine figuring they would not be found out. When it came time for the celebration it was found that the majority had brought water or watered down wine. There was no celebration.
    2. A hen asked those in the barnyard to help her plant seeds. No one helped but she planted. She asked for help weeding. No one helped with the weeding but she did the weeding. She asked for help with the harvest. No one helped with the harvest but she harvested the grain. She baked the bread and everyone turned up asking for the bread.
You have to give of yourself what you are willing to receive. I can’t do everything. But I can do something. And what I can do I will do.
    We the people ….

    • Matt: What if everyone really wants to bring good wine to the celebration? Then you can’t blame the victim. Both of your examples support the system and blame the victim.

That is usually the purpose of the popular myths. May I suggest reading The Origins of Political Order: From Prehuman Times to the French Revolution
      by Francis Fukuyama

  51. Gerry,
Concerning your last comment. One could make the same argument for the Roman Empire. And look whered they are now. I beleive that human nature supercedes even the most perfect governmental system – Nobility is in the eyes of the beholder. Tyranny has no season, and if not here already, lies patiently in ther wings.

  52. US envoys say Gaddafi is now giving VIAGRA to his men to help them RAPE MORE!
    (The children…………)

“Evil will prevail if enough good men (and women) do nothing.”

    Winston Churchill

  53. While we are moderating, Gerry, let me go on.

The point is that we are enslaved by our desires; and, that our desires are increasingly those which we have because they are imposed on us by all of “them”, who are our masters.

Our desire to be fed means we are told to eat billions of burgers, from cows fed on million of acres of grass; grown on land denuded of trees; at the cost of the forest; so the meat can be sold with the addictive combination of salt, fat and sugar, to people who get bigger and bigger; and more and more unhealthy; to the point of needing medical rehab; and promoted on reality shows about the biggest loser; to make the pendulum swing back to being thin, and then who start over and over again; so the doctors can prescribe medications sold by the chemical/medical/insurance complex of interconnected companies; who share the profits on the stock indexes, holding companies, charitable organizations; all driven by the tax power of the self serving masters…do you get this yet? OK; so enough, already.

How to be free? I suggest that desire is a pawn in a zero sum game. There are only so many who can share in fulfillment. There are only so many who can be fed, or medicated, or taxed; and so on. So, “where is my share”, is the mantra of entitlement; driven by the fear that it won’t be there when I need it?

It can also be the mantra of the diminishing return on the diminishing amount of re- investment in humanity. “My share” can mean also, this is all I really need.

“My share” can mean ‘My share is enough to share with you; so you can share with him; so he can share with me; so we can share with them, and they can share with the others who are just learning; so we can teach them to share with us.”

The notion, if you will, is that the antidote to the poison of desire, must be something like sharing. Here is how it works:

We are gathered together for a moment, and it is time to eat. There is no food. No kitchen, no cook, no meal. Will we starve? Will we panic? He said, take our whatever you have; and put it in a pile; and everyone started to empty their pockets, sacks, stashes, etc., until the “loaves and the fishes” were piled high. The story is biblical, but no matter. You get the idea.

    What do you think?

    Cordially,

    Billy

  54. Thank you, Gerry, once again for your eloquence. And, more importantly, for your heart.
In my humble opinion, there is no law left, except the right to a jury trial. Juries are the last remaining hope for help. What you have taught me–to be free to be myself, has worked for me and my clients in this last vestige of evidence of our Constitution.

  55. dave W says ENJOY

Re: “We are not a democracy.” Answer: Democracy has aptly been described as two or more wolves voting to deprive the sheep of something. The democracy that exists is what has been offered to you to hide what you were entitled too. The power of that alleged democracy is limited to a certain territory and those who elect to franchise with same as evidenced by voting. What you were offered is a warmed-over version of the same meal served cold upon the one time colonists–this is abbreviated “con”…as in Constitution…because the elitists of the day in a CONvention in secrecy and with the help of 34 lawyers tried desperately to undo in clever legalese what the patriots in 1776 accomplished in the first law, the Declaration of Independence. Namely they tried: (1) to remove personal consent from government selling you representatives and (2) To pass off law for the territory owned by government as if that law applied to the entirety of land between Canada and Mexico. Ahh…but there is a problem. All power flows in law in origin in law to latter creations. To propose otherwise means its self-destruction. And so in a masterful stroke of deception, they had to write this 4th law con document both ways–a continuance in authority and power not exceeding the first 3 law documents in case they were caught….along with some clever wording to imply a supreme law over ALL the land. It is no secret that George Washington funded secretly all the papers calling for a strong federal government–yet under the Articles, the federal government defeated the biggest nation. It is no secret that George Washington was an elitist in a common-man’s clothes having made more than one reference to the patriots fighting for him being “largely a distasteful lot.” It is also no secret what simple math can reveal by examining the 14 year requirement to be President of the United States. The earliest point in law for the Untied States is 1776 when the colonies ought to become free and independent states. Now add 14 to 1776 and you get 1790. When did George Washington take the oral oath? 1789. What oath is this for? An employment oath as President of the United States administering the territory owned by the United States of America. What oath could he not subscribe? The Art VI written oath necessary for adoption of the Con. [Ratified…not adopted.] So what you had happen was a hyjack of by the same fellows doing what is done today to you–offering you no choice yet calling it choice–and praying DESPERATELY that you don’t read the first 3 organic law documents of the USA to limit them to a certain playground of territory. These same fellows are the same people you SMELL today that smart patriots smelled yesterday. [Ever think…something is fishy… unalienable rights…yet government wants me to have a legal duty to it??] . Patrick Henry–real patriot–rightly nailed those constitutional conventionist’s with the same nose you have: “I SMELL A RAT”.

  56. Dave, Very well said. You described all politicians in your last line. They are all rats. thank you for telling it like it is.

  57. We are all eagerly awaiting the next article from the Master who is NOT INSANE.

    Thank you. 🙂

  58. However, if Argus Joseph Thompson, Insane is around……..would you ask him if it’s possible whether Homo sapien’s biggest mistake was creating MONEY?

It’s mind boggling really when we think of the consequences.

Thanks, Argus (If you’re around, ofcourse…….)

  59. There is absolutely NO question that generic blogging is being sold to the public KNOWINGLY with the exact same addictive outcome, for Corporate Profits.

Children are being neglected, jobs lost, lives are falling apart from BLOGGING ADDICTION and the Corporations do NOT CARE.

They even intentionally put out misleading headlines to make the masses angry and respond.

We are watching the new NICOTINE addiction, only the negative consequences come faster.

  60. Question to Carnac:

What could happen now that the world population has hit 7 BILLION and in England they have just started to use corpses to generate ELECTRICITY?

    Carnac answer:
“You could hear your yelling mom’s voice once again screaming at you through your lightbulbs…….”

  61. YOU have never had to hide from anything.
    WHO are you kidding? 🙂
Reminds me: The “possible” Independent” candidate for Prez, “The Donald” said recently on the telly” ” “I basically don’t LIKE wealthy people.”

Almost fell on the floor laughing thinking of your words.

(Not to mention “The Donald” spends every weekend (or almost…whenever he’s in the US) across the bridge at Mar-a lago WITH the wealthiest people in the WORLD, all night, both nights, raisng money (millions) for CHARITIES.

    People are FUNNY. 🙂

  62. Wish there was some way to put the video of Josh Groban and Sarah Brightman singing (last on the Rejection blog) up so that the lawyers and judges could benefit from it. EVERYONE needs the world’s most beautiful music at times. Remember that Gregory Peck once said before he died:
“Music is one of the only things that elevates us from this misery called reality.”

Never forgot it and it’s true. Little people , little problems. Big people, BIG PROBLEMS – and they need it MORE…….

  63. To Tired out:
Happy to help. Here it is, with pleasure. Doesn’t get much better than this, does it? Enjoy all.

  64. Really do love you, Gerry.
    WHO wouldn’t?

  65. I’m sort of laughing. You said we’re not a democracy. I figured that out when I wrote my Congressman a letter back in 1980, and he blew me off. Do you remember the Peter Principle? I went to college when Dr. Peter was teaching at USC. I’ve been following the Peter Prescription most of my life. I realized that the system was never going to be there for me, and I needed to join that vast group of individuals, who protect their own interest. The best way to prove that there is no democracy here, is to write a letter to your elected representatives. That’s what I call the Peter Principle test. If they really are interested, they’ll respond, and they’ll act. Interestingly enough, the only elected representative that ever responded, and acted, was Gov. George Bush. Odd isn’t it? I was living in Fort Worth, and noticed a lot of intersections with no signals. People were getting hurt in their cars, crashing into each other. I went to the city to find out if they could install some signals. No cooperation. So I wrote Gov. Bush. About 2 weeks later, some flatbed trucks showed up, with about 16 signals. When he was in the White House, I wrote a few more letters, got a response every time.
I have written Obama about a dozen letters, and not one reply. Do the math. ha ha ha ha I guess you can say, that your freedom depends on you.
